Walk with the dog

Sometimes it's nice to have a walk with the dog in different places, just not beside the town.

Our dog has needed to learn all kind of things, just for that he has possibility to follow us. Sitting on the scooter isn't his favourites, but on that way we can have a walk with him little bit outside the town.

From Hiorthhamn it's nice to start to walk upward and enjoy the view to the town.

Our "TV-tower" is a pretty popular destination for small scooter tours.

Lot of pictures you can see from Longyearbyen is taken from here.

There were a nice halo. That's always a beautiful phenomenon.

Our dog had an important task: He was carrying our down jackets and ekstra clothes.

Exploring surrounding areas

You don't need to be driving that far away from Longyearbyen for a have a nice day out and see some beautiful places.

Eskerfossen is a frozen waterfall in Eskerdalen, roughly said around 40 km from Longyearbyen.
I think Brattlidalen, a valley by Sassendalen, is just amazing.
A narrow canyon is really impressive. Sedimentary rock is making almost tunnel-like formations.
It would be really nice to see this place in summertime with it's waterwalls.
One high point of the trips is always the breaks with chokolade and hot blackcurrant drink.
The pale moon is wandering alone on the light sky.

Hello mountains

It's always nice to see our town from further away. Then we can really realise how small our town actually is between the mountains.

I think I can never be tired to see snowy mountains and fjords between them.

The point with the driving around with scooters is actually to enjoy these fantastic mountains. It feels good to be surrounded by them and see how majestics they really are.

Wind has made amazing desing on the mountain sides. I could think about to have that design on my wall papers.

The Sun Festival - Solfestuka

At 8th of March the sun is shining on the steps of the old hospital. That hospital is gone for long time ago and even the steps are just a copy but we're anyhow celebrating the return of the sun on that day.

People are gathering around they place were the hospital was in old days. Everybody is waiting excatingly: Will we see the sun this year or is it hiding behind the clouds?

It was -26 degrees Celcius and weather was brilliand. But organizers of the celebration had got the wrong time when the sun is getting over the mountains and so the most of the people got home before the sun came up.

Even thoug there didn't came any big celebration in that cold weather it was fantastic to get the sun back on our town. I think there is a reason to celebrate that a complete week.

-30 and windchill

We got in Svea about everything between fantastic sunshine to fresh breeze.

Week started with great weather. It was cold and windy, but that have to accepted in winter time. You see the ground is totally black around the town. That's coal dust from the processing coal.

The sun is finally over the mountains as it never been away.

Days are getting longer and longer. This picture is taken at 6:30. It's much nice to wake up when you know it's already starting to get light at that point of time.

But then weather changed and after that it was better to prioritise the work what could be done inside.

We didn't have much view from our windows.

Now the dark time is over and I'm happy to see my plants have survived over the winter. Quite impressing, becuase they really haven't got much light on our room with all of those ineffective compact fluorescent lamps.

1000 km southward - Tromsø

To take a 1000 km tour southward can sound like a pretty long trip, but actually we "just" end up to Tromsø then. But Tromsø is a really nice town and for a small week trip it's an easy access. Just about 1,5 hours flight and we're almost middle of the town.

Our hairy companion was following us - of course. He needs to be traveling inside cargo. For sure he doesn't think that's the best thing, but he accepts that because that's the way how he can follow us. He takes his tail between his legs but jumps voluntarily up in his own cage. He is already an experienced traveller and really easy to have with.

Tromsø is a nice town with great surrounding. We had a really cosy week nearby Tromsø.

We couldn't avoid polar bears even in Tromsø. Luckily these ones were peaceful.

Way to home

One week at work is over again and we sit ready in Dornier-228.

Pilots are doing good work. We can see them on the cockpit.

Hello Longyearbyen - We are almost there!
